Assessment of Knowledge of Anatomical Positions and Directions Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study examines undergraduate students’ knowledge of anatomical positions and directions, focusing on their understanding of the standardized terminology used to describe the location, orientation, and relationships of structures within the human body. Anatomical positions and directional terms such as superior, inferior, anterior, posterior, medial, lateral, proximal, distal, superficial, and deep provide a common language for describing anatomical relationships. Adequate knowledge of these concepts is fundamental to the study of human anatomy and the interpretation of anatomical structures. The study will assess students’ knowledge of anatomical positions and directions and determine their ability to correctly apply standard anatomical terminology when describing the location and relationships of body structures. The study will also identify areas in which students may experience difficulty in interpreting directional terms, body orientation, and spatial relationships between anatomical structures. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have received instruction in basic human anatomy will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured and validated questionnaire or anatomy-based knowledge assessment containing questions and practical identification tasks related to anatomical positions and directional terminology. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests may be applied to examine relevant differences or associations. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of anatomical positions and directions among the students. Differences may be observed in students’ ability to correctly interpret and apply directional terms when describing anatomical structures and their relationships. Some students may demonstrate stronger understanding of commonly used terms, while greater difficulty may occur with terms that require interpretation of three-dimensional orientation or comparison between different anatomical regions. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, and other health sciences professionals involved in anatomical instruction. The study may provide information on students’ understanding of fundamental anatomical terminology and identify areas that require greater instructional attention. The findings may also support the use of practical demonstrations, anatomical models, diagrams, and orientation-based learning activities to strengthen students’ understanding and application of anatomical positions and directions. The study will conclude by documenting undergraduate students’ knowledge of anatomical positions and directions and identifying areas where additional instructional support may be required. It is recommended that anatomical directional terminology be introduced and reinforced through practical, visual, and clinically oriented learning activities to improve students’ spatial understanding and accurate communication of anatomical relationships. Further studies involving larger and more diverse student populations are also recommended.
