Variation in Fingerprint Ridge Patterns Across Different Fingers Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study will examine the variation in fingerprint ridge patterns across different fingers among undergraduate students, with emphasis on the distribution of distinct dermatoglyphic patterns on the fingers. Fingerprint ridge patterns are formed during fetal development and remain relatively stable throughout life, making them important anatomical characteristics in human identification and population studies. Variations in these patterns across different fingers may provide useful information about individual morphological differences. The study will focus on identifying and documenting the major fingerprint ridge patterns present on the fingers of selected undergraduate students. The patterns to be examined may include loops, whorls, and arches, with attention to their occurrence on the thumb, index, middle, ring, and little fingers of both hands. The study will also determine the frequency and distribution of these patterns across the different fingers. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Fingerprint impressions will be obtained from the participants using standard dermatoglyphic procedures and suitable fingerprint recording materials. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate statistical technique will be used to examine variations in fingerprint ridge patterns across the different fingers. The study is expected to reveal variations in the distribution of fingerprint ridge patterns among the different fingers of the undergraduate students. It is also expected to identify the patterns that occur most frequently on particular fingers and determine whether meaningful differences exist in pattern distribution between the fingers. The findings may provide useful information on the morphological diversity of fingerprint ridge configurations within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, forensic scientists, anthropologists, criminologists, and researchers involved in dermatoglyphic studies and human identification. The information may contribute to the understanding of normal fingerprint pattern variation among young adults and provide reference data for comparative dermatoglyphic research. It may also support future studies investigating fingerprint characteristics across different populations. The study will conclude by providing information on the distribution and variation of fingerprint ridge patterns across different fingers among undergraduate students. It will recommend the continued use of standardized fingerprint collection and classification procedures in dermatoglyphic research and encourage further studies involving larger and more diverse populations to establish broader reference data on fingerprint pattern variation.
