BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The newspaper industry has long been a vital source of information, shaping public opinion, and serving as a cornerstone of the media landscape in Nigeria. However, in recent years, this industry has witnessed significant challenges, notably with the advent of digital media and the rise of the internet, which has transformed the way people consume news. This transformation has given rise to the phenomenon of free readers' activities, where individuals can access news content without the need for a paid subscription. The aim of this study is to delve into the intricate relationship between the influence of free readers' activities and the circulation of newspapers in Nigeria, with a particular focus on the Uyo Metropolis. This research seeks to shed light on the various factors and dynamics that impact newspaper circulation in a digital age, examining the roles of digital platforms, changing reader preferences, and the economic viability of traditional print media. By analyzing this case study, we aim to provide a nuanced understanding of the challenges and opportunities that newspapers face in the contemporary Nigerian media landscape. The advent of the internet and the proliferation of digital media have brought about a significant transformation in the media landscape worldwide, and Nigeria is no exception. The rise of digital platforms, social media, and online news outlets has provided readers with unprecedented access to news content at their fingertips. The convenience of accessing news for free online has led to a surge in free readers' activities, as readers can bypass traditional print media subscriptions.

In this context, the circulation of newspapers in Nigeria, like many other countries, has been impacted. Understanding the dynamics of newspaper circulation in Uyo can offer insights into the broader challenges faced by newspapers in Nigeria. Additionally, it allows us to explore the unique characteristics of a regional media market in a country with a diverse media landscape.

To delve deeper into the influence of free readers' activities on newspaper circulation, this study will employ a multifaceted approach.
