A STUDY OF CARTOONS IN SOME SELECTED NIGERIA NEWSPAPERS AND AUDIENCE'S READING STRATEGY

ABSTRACT

This study examines the use of cartoons in selected Nigerian newspapers and the reading strategies adopted by audiences in interpreting their messages. Newspaper cartoons constitute an important aspect of visual communication in journalism, serving as tools for expressing opinions, criticising social and political issues, educating readers, and stimulating public discourse. Through the combination of illustrations, humour, satire, symbolism, and written expressions, cartoons communicate complex messages in simplified and engaging forms. However, the interpretation of newspaper cartoons often depends on readers' educational backgrounds, cultural experiences, political awareness, media literacy, and ability to understand visual symbols. The study therefore aims to examine the themes and communicative functions of cartoons published in selected Nigerian newspapers, identify the reading strategies employed by audiences, assess readers' understanding and interpretation of cartoon messages, and determine the factors influencing audience engagement with newspaper cartoons. The study adopts a descriptive survey research design complemented by content analysis. Selected Nigerian newspapers, including The Punch, The Guardian, and Vanguard, will be examined to identify recurring cartoon themes, visual representations, linguistic features, and communication techniques. Primary data will be collected through structured questionnaires administered to selected newspaper readers to assess their exposure to cartoons, reading preferences, interpretation strategies, and perceptions of cartoon messages. The study will be guided by relevant concepts from semiotics and audience reception theory to explain how readers construct meaning from visual and textual elements. Data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, and mean scores, while thematic content analysis will be employed to examine the selected newspaper cartoons. The study is expected to reveal that newspaper cartoons address prominent political, economic, and social issues, particularly governance, corruption, insecurity, economic hardship, and societal values. Readers are expected to employ different interpretation strategies, including examining visual symbols, relating cartoon messages to current events, interpreting humour and satire, and drawing on personal experiences and cultural knowledge. Differences in educational attainment, political awareness, and familiarity with cartoon conventions may influence the accuracy and depth of audience interpretation. The study concludes that newspaper cartoons are significant instruments of public communication, social criticism, and opinion formation, while audience reading strategies play an essential role in determining how their messages are understood. It recommends that newspaper cartoonists employ culturally recognisable symbols, clear visual representations, and accessible language to improve audience comprehension. Media literacy education should also be encouraged to strengthen readers' ability to interpret visual messages critically and appreciate the communicative significance of newspaper cartoons.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Cartoons are an important part of newspaper communication because they help people understand social, political and economic issues through pictures, humour and simple messages. They are usually designed to entertain readers while also passing important information and expressing opinions about events happening in society (Adeagbo & Oyindamola, 2024). Unlike ordinary news reports that depend mainly on written words, cartoons use drawings, symbols, facial expressions and short captions to communicate ideas in a way that can easily attract people's attention (Onugha & Ezeifeka, 2024). This makes cartoons an interesting part of newspaper content because they allow readers to learn about serious issues while enjoying the illustrations presented to them (Baumgartner & Kassab, 2022).

In Nigeria, newspapers play an important role in informing the public about government activities, political events, economic challenges and other matters affecting the country (Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, 2025). Newspapers such as The Punch, Vanguard, The Guardian and Daily Trust publish different forms of information to keep readers aware of what is happening around them. Among these forms of information are political and social cartoons, which are often used to comment on the actions of political leaders, government policies, corruption, insecurity and other problems affecting the society (Adeagbo & Oyindamola, 2024). Through these cartoons, cartoonists can express criticism and draw attention to important issues without necessarily using long explanations (Ajibade & Ikuelogbon, 2025).

Cartoons do not communicate through pictures alone because readers also need to understand the meaning behind the drawings, symbols and words used by the cartoonist (Onugha & Ezeifeka, 2024). For this reason, different readers may interpret the same cartoon in different ways depending on their knowledge, experiences, educational background and understanding of the issue being presented (Mielczarek, 2022). Some readers may understand the message immediately, while others may need to study the pictures, read the captions and connect the cartoon to current events before understanding its meaning (Tong, 2025). This shows that the way audiences read and interpret cartoons is an important part of newspaper communication (Thomson & Anderson, 2025).

Audience reading strategy refers to the different ways people approach, examine and understand the information presented to them. When reading cartoons, some people pay attention to the pictures first, while others begin by reading the captions or identifying the people and events represented (Tong, 2025). These reading approaches can influence how readers understand the intended message and form opinions about the issues being discussed (Onugha & Ezeifeka, 2024). Research by Ayobolu (2024) also shows that newspaper reading habits in Nigeria are changing as more people access news through digital platforms and social media.

Despite the importance of cartoons in newspapers, it is necessary to understand whether readers actually pay attention to them and how they interpret the messages being communicated (Adeagbo & Oyindamola, 2024). Therefore, this study examines cartoons in some selected Nigerian newspapers and the reading strategies adopted by audiences. It seeks to understand how readers approach newspaper cartoons, the meaning they attach to them and the factors that influence their interpretation of the messages (Ajibade & Ikuelogbon, 2025). The study is also expected to provide useful information about the contribution of cartoons to newspaper communication and audience understanding in Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Newspaper cartoons are expected to do more than entertain readers because they are also used to communicate important messages about political, social and economic issues in the country. However, not every newspaper reader pays attention to cartoons or takes time to understand the messages they contain. Some readers may only look at the drawings for entertainment, while others may find it difficult to understand the symbols, expressions, humour and hidden meanings used by cartoonists. This situation raises questions about how effective newspaper cartoons are in communicating information and whether audiences properly understand the messages presented through them.

Another problem is that readers do not always use the same approach when reading and interpreting cartoons. Their understanding may depend on their educational background, personal experiences, knowledge of current affairs and interest in newspaper content. Although cartoons are regularly used in Nigerian newspapers to discuss important national issues, there is a need to understand how audiences read them, the strategies they adopt and the factors that influence their interpretations. It is against this background that this study examines cartoons in some selected Nigerian newspapers and the reading strategies adopted by audiences.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to determine the influence of cartoons in some selected Nigerian newspapers on audience understanding and reading strategies.

Specific objectives include:

i. To evaluate the impact of newspaper cartoons on audience understanding of social, political and economic issues in Nigeria.

ii. To determine the reading strategies adopted by audiences when reading and interpreting cartoons in selected Nigerian newspapers.

iii. To find out how audience characteristics, such as educational background and knowledge of current affairs, influence their interpretation of newspaper cartoons.
