INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Adolescence is a critical developmental stage characterized by significant physical, emotional, and social changes, which often include the exploration of sexual identity and behavior (World Health Organization [WHO], 2020). During this period, teenagers are particularly vulnerable to misinformation and risky behaviors due to limited access to accurate sexual health knowledge (UNICEF, 2019). The relationship between sexual health knowledge and behavior among teenagers has been a topic of increasing concern globally, as it directly impacts public health outcomes such as teenage pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and mental health issues (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2021). Studies have shown that teenagers with adequate sexual health knowledge are more likely to engage in safer sexual practices, delay sexual initiation, and make informed decisions regarding their sexual health (Kirby, 2020). However, disparities in access to comprehensive sexual education persist, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, where cultural taboos and inadequate resources hinder the dissemination of accurate information (Guttmacher Institute, 2022).

The importance of sexual health education cannot be overstated, as it serves as a foundation for fostering responsible sexual behavior among teenagers (Santelli et al., 2018). Evidence suggests that comprehensive sexual education programs, which include topics such as contraception, consent, and gender equality, are effective in reducing risky sexual behaviors and improving health outcomes (Bearinger et al., 2019). Despite this, debates surrounding the content and delivery of sexual education continue to pose challenges. For instance, abstinence-only programs, which emphasize refraining from sexual activity until marriage, have been criticized for failing to address the realities of teenage sexual behavior and for withholding critical information about contraception and STI prevention (Stanger-Hall & Hall, 2020). These gaps in education contribute to misconceptions and risky behaviors, underscoring the need for evidence-based interventions.

In recent years, technological advancements have introduced new avenues for disseminating sexual health information, including online platforms and mobile applications (Biddlecom et al., 2021). While these tools have the potential to reach a broader audience, concerns remain about the accuracy and reliability of the information available online (Livingstone et al., 2019). Furthermore, the digital divide exacerbates inequalities, as teenagers in rural or economically disadvantaged areas may lack access to these resources (Hobbs et al., 2022). This highlights the importance of integrating traditional educational methods with innovative approaches to ensure equitable access to sexual health knowledge.

The role of parents, peers, and educators in shaping teenagers' sexual health knowledge and behavior cannot be ignored. Research indicates that open communication between parents and teenagers about sexual health fosters trust and encourages responsible decision-making (Guilamo-Ramos et al., 2021). Similarly, peer influence plays a significant role, as teenagers often model their behaviors based on the attitudes and actions of their friends (Prinstein, 2020). Educators, on the other hand, are uniquely positioned to provide structured and evidence-based information, yet many face challenges such as limited training and cultural resistance (Haberland & Rogow, 2020). Addressing these barriers is essential for creating an environment that supports teenagers in making informed choices about their sexual health.

Globally, the consequences of inadequate sexual health knowledge among teenagers are profound. Teenage pregnancies, for example, not only disrupt educational and career aspirations but also contribute to cycles of poverty and inequality (Patton et al., 2021). Additionally, the rising prevalence of STIs among adolescents underscores the urgent need for effective prevention strategies (Kann et al., 2022). Mental health implications, such as anxiety and depression associated with unplanned pregnancies or STI diagnoses, further highlight the multifaceted impact of sexual health knowledge on overall well-being (Chandra-Mouli et al., 2020). By exploring the relationship between sexual health knowledge and behavior, this study aims to contribute to the development of targeted interventions that address these pressing public health issues.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of various sexual health education programs, a significant proportion of teenagers continue to engage in risky sexual behaviors due to insufficient knowledge and misconceptions (UNESCO, 2021). This gap between knowledge and behavior poses a challenge to achieving improved sexual health outcomes among
