Sexual Dimorphism in Sartorius Muscle Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study examines sexual dimorphism in the dimensions of the sartorius muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in selected muscle measurements between male and female individuals. The sartorius is the longest muscle in the human body and extends obliquely across the anterior thigh from the anterior superior iliac spine to the medial aspect of the proximal tibia. It contributes to movements at the hip and knee joints and has important anatomical relationships within the thigh. Knowledge of sex-related variation in its dimensions is important for understanding musculoskeletal anatomy and may provide useful information for clinical assessment and anatomical reference. The study will assess selected dimensions of the sartorius muscle among undergraduate students using appropriate standardized anatomical and imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include determining the length, thickness, and other selected dimensions of the sartorius muscle, comparing these measurements between male and female participants, assessing the magnitude of observed sex-related differences, and documenting the general dimensional characteristics of the muscle within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of male and female undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, while sartorius muscle dimensions will be assessed using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate independent-group statistical tests will be applied to determine whether observed differences between male and female participants are statistically significant. The study is expected to reveal differences in selected sartorius muscle dimensions between male and female participants. Some measurements may show statistically significant differences, while others may demonstrate considerable overlap between the groups. The findings are expected to provide information on the extent of sex-related variation in sartorius muscle morphology among the study population without assuming that the observed characteristics are exclusively determined by sex. The findings will be useful to anatomists, orthopedic surgeons, physiotherapists, sports medicine practitioners, radiologists, rehabilitation specialists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the lower limb. The study may provide useful reference information for interpreting musculoskeletal imaging, understanding variation in thigh muscle morphology, planning rehabilitation and clinical procedures, and improving anatomical knowledge relevant to conditions affecting the hip, thigh, and knee. The study will conclude by documenting the sex-related differences in sartorius muscle dimensions among undergraduate students. It is recommended that documented variations be considered when interpreting anatomical and imaging findings involving the sartorius muscle, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on sartorius muscle dimensions.
