Sexual Dimorphism in Internal Acoustic Meatus Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study examines sexual dimorphism in the dimensions of the internal acoustic meatus among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its morphology between male and female individuals. The internal acoustic meatus is an important opening located on the posterior surface of the petrous part of the temporal bone and provides passage for the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves as well as associated vessels. Variations in its dimensions may contribute to the understanding of temporal bone morphology and may have relevance in radiological assessment, neuroanatomical studies, and procedures involving the posterior cranial fossa. The study aims to determine sexual dimorphism in selected dimensions of the internal acoustic meatus among undergraduate students. It will specifically measure the relevant dimensions of the internal acoustic meatus, compare the measurements between male and female participants, and determine whether measurable differences exist between the groups. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be employed for the study. Appropriate sampling procedures will be used to select eligible undergraduate students, while measurements of the internal acoustic meatus will be obtained using suitable imaging-based or osteological assessment methods and standardized anatomical landmarks. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation, while appropriate independent-group statistical tests will be used to compare the measurements between male and female participants. Statistical analysis will also be used to determine the significance of the observed differences. The study is expected to reveal variation in the dimensions of the internal acoustic meatus among the participants and may demonstrate differences in selected measurements between male and female groups. The findings are expected to provide additional information on sex-related variation in temporal bone morphology and contribute to the anatomical understanding of the internal acoustic meatus among young adults. The findings are expected to be useful to anatomists, radiologists, otologists, neurosurgeons, forensic practitioners, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the temporal bone and posterior cranial fossa. The study may provide anatomical reference information that can support radiological interpretation, understanding of the internal acoustic meatus, forensic anthropological studies, and procedures involving structures located within or around the temporal bone. The study will conclude by documenting the pattern of sexual dimorphism in internal acoustic meatus dimensions among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized measurement procedures be adopted in anatomical and radiological studies of the internal acoustic meatus and that further research involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to establish broader reference data on its morphological characteristics.
