Sexual Dimorphism in Infraorbital Foramen Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study examines sexual dimorphism in infraorbital foramen dimensions among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in the size and morphology of the infraorbital foramen between male and female individuals. The infraorbital foramen is an important opening on the anterior surface of the maxilla that transmits the infraorbital nerve and associated vessels. Knowledge of its dimensions and anatomical variation is important for understanding maxillofacial anatomy and may provide useful information for clinical, radiological, and forensic applications. The study will assess selected dimensions of the infraorbital foramen among male and female undergraduate students using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based or osteological measurement procedures. The specific objectives will include determining the length, breadth, and other measurable dimensions of the infraorbital foramen, documenting its morphological characteristics, assessing right and left side variation where applicable, and comparing the observed measurements between male and female groups. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable cranial imaging or osteological specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Measurements will be obtained using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate measurement procedures. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine significant differences between male and female groups. The study is expected to reveal measurable differences in selected infraorbital foramen dimensions between male and female undergraduate students, with some dimensions potentially demonstrating statistically significant sexual variation. Variations in the shape and configuration of the foramen may also be observed within the study population. The findings are expected to provide useful anatomical reference values while demonstrating that infraorbital foramen dimensions may vary among individuals. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, ophthalmologists, plastic surgeons, forensic anthropologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the maxillofacial region. The study may contribute to improved understanding of sexual variation in infraorbital foramen morphology and provide reference information for radiological interpretation, regional anaesthesia, dental procedures, surgical planning, and forensic identification. The study will conclude by providing information on sexual variation in the dimensions and morphology of the infraorbital foramen among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based measurement procedures be maintained when assessing the infraorbital region, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
