Relationship Between Vocal Fold Length and Laryngeal Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between vocal fold length and laryngeal dimensions among undergraduate students, with emphasis on determining whether variations in vocal fold length are associated with differences in selected dimensions of the larynx. The vocal folds are important structures within the larynx that participate in phonation, regulation of airflow, and protection of the lower respiratory tract. Their dimensions are closely related to the structural characteristics of the laryngeal framework, and understanding these relationships may contribute to knowledge of normal anatomical variation and support clinical assessment of the laryngeal region. The study will assess vocal fold length and selected laryngeal dimensions among undergraduate students and determine the strength and direction of their relationships. The specific objectives will include measuring vocal fold length, determining selected dimensions of the laryngeal framework, comparing the measured anatomical features where applicable, and assessing the association between vocal fold length and the selected laryngeal dimensions. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Vocal fold length and laryngeal dimensions will be obtained using standardized imaging-based or laryngoscopic assessment procedures and appropriate anatomical landmarks, depending on the assessment method employed. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation analysis and other appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to determine the relationships between vocal fold length and the selected laryngeal measurements. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in vocal fold length and laryngeal dimensions among the undergraduate students studied. A positive or negative association may be observed between vocal fold length and selected laryngeal measurements, with some dimensions potentially demonstrating stronger relationships than others. Some laryngeal measurements may also show limited association with vocal fold length, reflecting the complexity of individual anatomical variation. The findings will be useful to anatomists, otolaryngologists, laryngologists, radiologists, speech and language professionals, voice specialists, and other healthcare practitioners involved in the assessment of the larynx and voice. The study may provide useful reference information on the relationship between vocal fold length and the dimensions of the laryngeal framework and may support the interpretation of anatomical and imaging findings. It may also contribute to anatomical knowledge relevant to voice assessment and clinical evaluation of the laryngeal region. The study will conclude by determining the nature and strength of the relationship between vocal fold length and selected laryngeal dimensions among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized imaging and laryngoscopic procedures be used when assessing vocal fold and laryngeal measurements, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on vocal fold morphometry and its relationship with laryngeal dimensions.
