Relationship Between Thoracic Inlet Dimensions and Body Height Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study examines the relationship between thoracic inlet dimensions and body height among undergraduate students. The thoracic inlet, also known as the superior thoracic aperture, forms the upper opening of the thoracic cavity and is bounded by the first thoracic vertebra, first ribs, and superior border of the manubrium. Its dimensions contribute to the structural configuration of the thorax and may vary among individuals. Establishing the relationship between thoracic inlet measurements and body height may provide useful anatomical information for anthropometric, radiological, and clinical applications. The study aims to determine the dimensions of the thoracic inlet among undergraduate students and establish the relationship between selected thoracic inlet measurements and body height. It will specifically assess parameters such as the transverse and anteroposterior dimensions of the thoracic inlet and determine the strength and direction of their association with body height within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the predetermined inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Body height will be measured using a standardized anthropometric procedure, while thoracic inlet dimensions will be assessed using appropriate anatomical landmarks and standardized imaging or anatomical measurement procedures. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation analysis will be used to determine the relationship between thoracic inlet dimensions and body height. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in thoracic inlet dimensions among the participants. A statistically meaningful association may be observed between selected thoracic inlet measurements and body height, with the strength and direction of the relationship varying across the measured parameters. The findings are also expected to provide information on the extent to which thoracic inlet dimensions correspond with overall body stature within the study population. The findings are expected to provide useful anatomical reference information for anatomists, anthropologists, radiologists, thoracic surgeons, orthopaedic practitioners, and other healthcare professionals. The results may contribute to improved understanding of thoracic morphology, interpretation of thoracic imaging, assessment of anatomical variation, and the development of population-specific anthropometric reference data. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between thoracic inlet dimensions and body height among undergraduate students. It will recommend the use of standardized anthropometric and anatomical measurement procedures in future investigations and encourage further studies involving larger and more diverse populations to establish broader reference data on thoracic inlet dimensions and their relationship with body stature.
