Relationship Between Suprascapular Notch Shape and Scapular Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The suprascapular notch is a distinctive anatomical feature situated along the superior border of the scapula and provides a passage for the suprascapular nerve and accompanying vessels. Its shape may vary considerably among individuals and may influence the anatomical relationship between the notch and neurovascular structures in the shoulder region. Scapular dimensions may also differ according to overall skeletal morphology, making the relationship between suprascapular notch shape and scapular measurements relevant to anatomical and morphometric investigations. The study will therefore examine the relationship between suprascapular notch shape and scapular dimensions among undergraduate students. The study will identify the different morphological shapes of the suprascapular notch and determine the relevant dimensions of the scapula among undergraduate students. It will also assess the width, depth, and other appropriate measurements of the suprascapular notch and examine their relationship with scapular length, breadth, and selected scapular indices. The study will further determine whether particular notch shapes are associated with characteristic patterns of scapular dimensions. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and scapular morphology will be assessed through standardized anatomical and morphometric procedures. Relevant scapular dimensions and suprascapular notch measurements will be obtained using appropriate osteological or imaging-based methods, depending on the study setting and available materials. The data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and comparative statistical tests will be applied to examine the relationships between notch characteristics and scapular dimensions. The study is expected to reveal variation in the shape and dimensions of the suprascapular notch among the participants. Differences in scapular length, breadth, and selected morphometric indices may be observed across the identified notch shapes. The findings are expected to indicate whether measurable relationships exist between suprascapular notch morphology and overall scapular dimensions, thereby providing additional information on anatomical variation within the shoulder region. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, radiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the shoulder region. Information on the relationship between suprascapular notch morphology and scapular dimensions may contribute to the interpretation of anatomical and radiological findings and improve understanding of the anatomical factors surrounding the suprascapular nerve. The study may also provide useful reference information for osteological identification and future research involving scapular morphometry. The study will conclude by establishing the observed patterns of suprascapular notch morphology and their relationship with selected scapular dimensions among undergraduate students. It is expected to demonstrate whether specific notch shapes are associated with differences in scapular measurements. The study will recommend the use of standardized morphometric procedures in future investigations and encourage further research involving larger and more diverse populations to improve understanding of suprascapular notch and scapular morphological variation.
