Relationship Between Soleus Muscle Dimensions and Calf Circumference Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between soleus muscle dimensions and calf circumference among young adults, with emphasis on determining whether measurable variations in the size of the soleus muscle are associated with differences in external calf circumference. The soleus is a major muscle of the posterior compartment of the leg and contributes significantly to plantarflexion of the ankle and maintenance of posture during standing and locomotion. Understanding the relationship between its dimensions and calf circumference may provide useful information on the anatomical factors contributing to calf size and lower-limb morphology. The study will assess selected dimensions of the soleus muscle and determine their relationship with calf circumference among young adults. The specific objectives will include measuring selected dimensions of the soleus muscle, determining the calf circumference of the participants, examining the relationship between soleus muscle dimensions and calf circumference, and assessing variations in the measured parameters between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adult participants will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Soleus muscle dimensions will be obtained using standardized anatomical or imaging-based assessment procedures, while calf circumference will be measured using standardized anthropometric techniques and appropriate measuring instruments. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation, while correlation and appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine the strength and significance of the observed relationships. The study is expected to reveal measurable relationships between selected soleus muscle dimensions and calf circumference among the participants.
