Relationship Between Physical Activity Level and Chest Expansion

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between physical activity level and chest expansion among young adults, with emphasis on how differences in regular physical activity may be associated with thoracic movement during respiration. Chest expansion reflects the mobility of the thoracic cage and the functional interaction of the respiratory muscles, ribs, and associated anatomical structures during breathing. Understanding the relationship between physical activity and chest expansion may provide useful information on normal respiratory movement and functional thoracic anatomy. The study will assess the physical activity levels of young adults and determine their corresponding chest expansion during respiration. Physical activity level will be assessed using a suitable standardized questionnaire or activity classification method, while chest expansion will be measured using standardized non-invasive procedures at appropriate thoracic landmarks during maximal inspiration and expiration. Measurements will be obtained under comparable resting conditions to ensure consistency and reduce the influence of temporary changes in respiratory activity. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adult participants will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data obtained on physical activity levels and chest expansion will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate correlation or inferential statistical test will be applied to determine the nature and statistical significance of the relationship between the variables. The study is expected to reveal variations in chest expansion among participants with different levels of physical activity. Participants with higher levels of regular physical activity may demonstrate greater chest expansion compared with those with lower levels of physical activity, although individual differences may be observed. Variations may also occur according to the type, frequency, and duration of physical activities performed by the participants. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, sports scientists, respiratory health professionals, physical educators, and other healthcare practitioners involved in respiratory and functional assessment. The study may provide useful anatomical information on thoracic movement and contribute to a better understanding of how regular physical activity relates to respiratory mechanics and chest mobility among young adults. The study will conclude by documenting the observed relationship between physical activity level and chest expansion among the study population. It is recommended that appropriate methods of assessing physical activity and chest expansion be used when evaluating respiratory movement, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference information on physical activity and thoracic respiratory mobility.
