Relationship Between Nasal Septal Dimensions and External Nasal Measurements Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between nasal septal dimensions and external nasal measurements among young adults, with emphasis on determining whether variations in the internal dimensions of the nasal septum are associated with differences in externally measurable nasal features. The nasal septum forms the structural partition between the two nasal cavities and consists of bony and cartilaginous components that contribute to nasal support and airflow. External nasal measurements provide accessible anthropometric indicators of nasal morphology, and examining their relationship with internal septal dimensions may contribute to a better understanding of individual anatomical variation. The study will assess selected dimensions of the nasal septum and external nasal measurements among young adults and determine the strength and direction of their relationships. The specific objectives will include measuring selected dimensions of the nasal septum, determining external nasal measurements such as nasal length, nasal breadth, and other appropriate anthropometric parameters, comparing the observed measurements, and assessing the association between internal nasal septal dimensions and external nasal measurements. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. External nasal measurements will be obtained using standardized anthropometric procedures and anatomical landmarks, while nasal septal dimensions will be assessed using appropriate imaging-based or anatomical procedures. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation analysis and other appropriate inferential statistical techniques will be used to determine the relationships between nasal septal dimensions and external nasal measurements. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in both nasal septal dimensions and external nasal measurements among the young adults studied. A positive or negative relationship may be observed between selected internal septal dimensions and external nasal measurements, with some parameters potentially demonstrating stronger associations than others. Some measurements may show limited or no significant association, reflecting the complexity of the relationship between internal and external nasal structures. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, otolaryngologists, rhinologists, maxillofacial surgeons, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, and other healthcare practitioners involved in the assessment of nasal anatomy. The study may provide useful reference information on the relationship between external nasal morphology and internal septal dimensions and may support the interpretation of anatomical and imaging findings. The findings may also contribute to anatomical and anthropometric knowledge relevant to nasal assessment and surgical planning. The study will conclude by determining the nature and strength of the relationship between nasal septal dimensions and external nasal measurements among young adults. It is recommended that standardized anthropometric and imaging-based procedures be used when assessing internal and external nasal dimensions, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on the relationship between nasal septal morphology and external nasal characteristics.
