Relationship Between Metatarsal Head Dimensions and Foot Breadth Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between metatarsal head dimensions and foot breadth among undergraduate students, with emphasis on determining whether variations in the dimensions of the metatarsal heads are associated with differences in the transverse breadth of the foot. The metatarsal heads form the distal ends of the metatarsal bones and contribute to the forefoot structure, weight distribution, and articulation with the proximal phalanges. Understanding their dimensions in relation to overall foot breadth may provide useful information on normal foot morphology and skeletal variation. The study will determine selected dimensions of the metatarsal heads and measure foot breadth among undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include obtaining relevant metatarsal head measurements, determining foot breadth, examining the relationship between the selected metatarsal head dimensions and foot breadth, and documenting variations in the measurements observed within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Metatarsal head dimensions will be assessed using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging or osteological measurement procedures, while foot breadth will be obtained using standardized anthropometric techniques. The data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine the strength and significance of the observed relationships. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in metatarsal head dimensions and foot breadth among the participants. A positive or otherwise measurable association may be observed between selected metatarsal head dimensions and foot breadth, although the strength and statistical significance of the relationships will depend on the characteristics of the study population and the specific measurements assessed. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, orthopaedic professionals, podiatrists, physiotherapists, footwear and biomechanical researchers, and other professionals involved in the assessment of foot structure and function. The study may provide reference information on the relationship between metatarsal morphology and foot breadth and may contribute to improved understanding of forefoot anatomy, anthropometric variation, and clinical or biomechanical assessment of the foot. The study will conclude by documenting the dimensions of the metatarsal heads and their relationship with foot breadth among the study population. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and anthropometric procedures be used when assessing metatarsal and foot dimensions, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to provide broader reference data on metatarsal morphology and foot structure.
