Relationship Between Mental Foramen Position and Mandibular Body Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between mental foramen position and mandibular body dimensions among undergraduate students. The mental foramen is an important anatomical opening on the body of the mandible through which the mental nerve and associated blood vessels emerge. Its position in relation to surrounding mandibular landmarks is clinically significant because variations may influence dental anaesthesia, implant placement, mandibular surgery, and other procedures involving the lower jaw. Understanding its relationship with mandibular dimensions may provide useful information on individual anatomical variation. The study will aim to determine the position of the mental foramen in relation to standardized mandibular anatomical landmarks and assess selected dimensions of the mandibular body among undergraduate students. It will also examine the relationship between mental foramen position and the measured mandibular body dimensions. The study will further document the degree of variation observed in the anatomical location of the mental foramen within the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the established inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. The position of the mental foramen and relevant mandibular body dimensions will be assessed using standardized anatomical landmarks and suitable imaging or osteological measurement procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and inferential statistical techniques will be used to determine the relationship between mental foramen position and mandibular body dimensions. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in the position of the mental foramen and mandibular body dimensions among the participants. A statistically significant association may be observed between selected mandibular dimensions and the position of the mental foramen. The findings are expected to demonstrate patterns of anatomical variation that may contribute to a better understanding of the spatial relationship between the mental foramen and the surrounding mandibular structures. The findings will be useful to anatomists, dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, radiologists, dental implant practitioners, and other healthcare professionals involved in procedures around the mandibular region. Information on the relationship between mental foramen position and mandibular dimensions may assist in anatomical localization and support safer planning of clinical and surgical procedures. The findings may also serve as reference information for anatomical education and future studies involving mandibular morphology. The study will conclude by providing information on the relationship between mental foramen position and mandibular body dimensions among undergraduate students. It will recommend the use of standardized anatomical and imaging procedures when evaluating the mental foramen and surrounding mandibular structures. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations will also be recommended to establish broader reference data on the anatomical relationship between mental foramen position and mandibular dimensions.
