Relationship Between Maxillary Sinus Dimensions and Facial Measurements Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between maxillary sinus dimensions and facial measurements among undergraduate students, with emphasis on the anatomical characteristics of the maxillary sinus and surrounding facial structures. The maxillary sinus is the largest of the paranasal sinuses and occupies a central position within the maxilla, maintaining close anatomical relationships with the orbit, nasal cavity, and dental structures. Understanding its dimensions in relation to facial measurements is relevant to craniofacial anatomy, radiology, dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and clinical assessment of the midface. The study aims to determine the dimensions of the maxillary sinus and selected facial measurements among undergraduate students. It will also assess the relationship between maxillary sinus dimensions and facial measurements and determine whether measurable associations exist between the selected anatomical parameters. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, while standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures will be used for the assessment. Maxillary sinus dimensions will be obtained through appropriate radiological imaging procedures, while facial measurements will be obtained using standardized anthropometric or imaging-based techniques. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine the relationships between the variables. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in maxillary sinus dimensions and facial measurements among the participants. A measurable relationship is also expected between selected maxillary sinus dimensions and facial measurements, although the strength and direction of the associations may vary among individuals. The findings are expected to provide useful information on the anatomical relationship between the maxillary sinus and external facial dimensions. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, dentists, orthodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and other healthcare professionals involved in the evaluation of maxillofacial structures. The study may provide reference information that can support radiological interpretation, anatomical assessment, dental treatment planning, surgical procedures, and evaluation of variations within the midfacial region. The study concludes that investigating the relationship between maxillary sinus dimensions and facial measurements can contribute to a better understanding of individual variation in maxillofacial morphology. It is recommended that standardized imaging and measurement procedures be maintained in future investigations and that larger and more diverse populations be studied to establish broader anatomical reference data on maxillary sinus and facial dimensions.
