Relationship Between Mandibular Foramen Position and Ramus Dimensions Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between mandibular foramen position and ramus dimensions among undergraduate students. The mandibular foramen is an important anatomical landmark located on the medial surface of the mandibular ramus and serves as the entry point for the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle. Its position in relation to the surrounding ramus structures is of considerable anatomical and clinical importance, particularly in procedures involving the mandible and inferior alveolar nerve. The study will assess the position of the mandibular foramen in relation to standardized anatomical landmarks on the mandibular ramus. Ramus dimensions, including relevant measurements of ramus height and breadth, will also be determined using appropriate standardized anatomical measurement procedures. The study will focus on identifying variations in mandibular foramen position and determining whether measurable associations exist between its location and the dimensions of the mandibular ramus. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the eligibility criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Measurements will be obtained using suitable anthropometric, osteometric, or imaging-based techniques, depending on the study setting, with standardized anatomical landmarks used to ensure consistency. Data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation and appropriate comparative analyses will be used to determine the relationship between mandibular foramen position and ramus dimensions. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in the position of the mandibular foramen and the dimensions of the ramus among the undergraduate students. It is also expected to determine whether significant relationships exist between selected ramus dimensions and the location of the mandibular foramen. The findings will describe the strength and direction of any observed associations without implying that ramus dimensions directly cause differences in mandibular foramen position. The findings will be useful to anatomists, dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, radiologists, orthodontists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of mandibular structures. The study may provide reference information that can contribute to anatomical understanding, interpretation of mandibular imaging, and planning of procedures such as inferior alveolar nerve blocks and other interventions involving the mandibular ramus. The study will conclude by highlighting the observed relationship between mandibular foramen position and ramus dimensions among undergraduate students. It will recommend the use of standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures when assessing the mandibular foramen and ramus. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations and appropriate imaging or osteological methods will also be recommended to establish broader reference data.
