Relationship Between Hypoglossal Canal Position and Occipital Bone Dimensions Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between hypoglossal canal position and occipital bone dimensions among young adults, with emphasis on the anatomical association between the hypoglossal canal and the surrounding structures of the occipital bone. The hypoglossal canal is an important opening within the occipital bone that transmits the hypoglossal nerve and associated vascular structures. Variations in its position relative to selected occipital landmarks may provide useful information on cranial base morphology and may have relevance in radiological assessment, anatomical studies, and surgical procedures involving the posterior cranial fossa and craniovertebral region. The study aims to determine the relationship between hypoglossal canal position and selected dimensions of the occipital bone among young adults. It will specifically assess the position of the hypoglossal canal relative to standardized occipital landmarks, determine selected occipital bone dimensions, and evaluate the degree of association between hypoglossal canal position and the measured occipital parameters. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be employed for the study. Appropriate sampling procedures will be used to select eligible young adults, while measurements of the hypoglossal canal and occipital bone will be obtained using suitable imaging-based or osteological assessment methods and standardized anatomical landmarks. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean and standard deviation, while correlation analysis will be used to determine the relationship between hypoglossal canal position and selected occipital bone dimensions. Appropriate statistical tests will be applied to determine the significance of the observed relationships. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in hypoglossal canal position and occipital bone dimensions among the participants and may demonstrate varying degrees of association between the measured parameters. The study may provide anatomical reference information that can support interpretation of cranial imaging, identification of important occipital landmarks, surgical planning, and further research on hypoglossal canal and occipital bone morphology. The study will conclude by establishing the nature of the relationship between hypoglossal canal position and selected occipital bone dimensions among young adults. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based measurement procedures be adopted in studies of the hypoglossal canal and occipital bone and that further investigations involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to provide broader reference data on their morphological relationships.
