Relationship Between Hand Muscle Endurance and Functional Hand Performance

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between hand muscle endurance and functional hand performance among young adults, with emphasis on how the ability of the hand and forearm muscles to sustain repeated or prolonged contractions may influence the performance of everyday hand-related activities. Hand muscle endurance is important for maintaining grip and performing tasks that require continuous or repeated use of the hand. Understanding this relationship may provide useful information on the functional capacity of the hand and its contribution to effective upper-limb performance. The study will assess hand muscle endurance and functional hand performance among the participants using standardized assessment procedures. Hand muscle endurance will be evaluated through sustained or repeated grip contractions using a hand-held dynamometer or other appropriate grip assessment method. Functional hand performance will be assessed using standardized tasks that require activities such as gripping, manipulating, transferring, or repeatedly handling objects. The selected assessments will provide measurable information on muscular endurance and practical hand function. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Young adult participants will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and data will be collected through standardized hand muscle endurance and functional performance tests. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate correlation or inferential statistical test will be applied to determine the relationship between hand muscle endurance and functional hand performance. The study is expected to reveal a measurable relationship between hand muscle endurance and functional hand performance among the participants. Individuals with greater hand muscle endurance may demonstrate better ability to sustain and complete functional hand tasks, while participants with lower endurance may experience earlier fatigue and reduced task performance. Variations in the strength of the relationship may also be observed depending on the nature and duration of the functional activities performed. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation professionals, ergonomists, sports professionals, and other healthcare practitioners concerned with hand and upper-limb function. The study may provide useful information on the contribution of hand muscle endurance to functional performance and may support the assessment of individuals whose activities require sustained or repetitive hand use. The findings may also assist in developing appropriate exercise and rehabilitation strategies aimed at improving hand endurance and functional capacity. The study will conclude by determining the relationship between hand muscle endurance and functional hand performance among the study population. It is recommended that appropriate hand endurance assessment and functional performance testing be incorporated into relevant physical and rehabilitation evaluations, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to provide broader information on the relationship between hand muscle endurance and functional hand performance.
