Relationship Between Hand Grip Strength and Forearm Circumference Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study will examine the relationship between hand grip strength and forearm circumference among undergraduate students. Hand grip strength represents the force generated by the muscles involved in gripping, while forearm circumference provides an anthropometric indication of the size of the forearm region. Understanding the relationship between these variables is important in describing upper limb characteristics and assessing the association between forearm dimensions and functional hand strength among young adults. The study will determine the hand grip strength of the participants using a standardized hand dynamometer and appropriate testing procedures. Forearm circumference will be measured at a standardized anatomical location using a non-stretchable measuring tape. The study will also assess variations in both measurements and determine the degree of association between hand grip strength and forearm circumference among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the established inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through standardized anthropometric and strength measurements, with repeated measurements where necessary to improve reliability. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation analysis will be employed to determine the relationship between hand grip strength and forearm circumference. The study is expected to reveal measurable variations in hand grip strength and forearm circumference among the undergraduate students. A significant positive or negative relationship may be observed between the two variables, indicating the extent to which differences in forearm circumference correspond with variations in hand grip strength. The findings are expected to provide quantitative information on the association between an upper limb anthropometric measurement and functional hand strength without implying a causal relationship. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, sports scientists, ergonomists, and other professionals involved in musculoskeletal and functional assessment. Further research involving larger and more diverse populations will also be recommended to provide broader information on the relationship between forearm dimensions and hand grip strength.
