Relationship Between Glenoid Cavity Shape and Scapular Dimensions Among Young Adults

Abstract

The glenoid cavity is a shallow articular surface located on the lateral aspect of the scapula and forms the glenohumeral joint with the head of the humerus. Its shape and dimensions are important anatomical characteristics that contribute to shoulder joint morphology, stability, and range of movement. Variations in glenoid cavity shape may occur in association with differences in the overall dimensions of the scapula. The study will therefore examine the relationship between glenoid cavity shape and selected scapular dimensions among young adults. The study will identify and classify the different morphological shapes of the glenoid cavity among the participants. It will also determine selected scapular measurements, including scapular length, breadth, and other relevant morphometric parameters, and assess their relationship with glenoid cavity shape. The study will further determine the frequency and distribution of the identified glenoid cavity shapes and provide descriptive information on the morphometric characteristics of the scapula. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Young adults will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, and the scapulae will be examined using standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures. Glenoid cavity morphology and selected scapular dimensions will be assessed through appropriate osteological or imaging-based methods, depending on the study setting and available materials. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and comparative statistical tests will be applied to examine the relationship between glenoid cavity shape and scapular measurements. The study is expected to reveal variation in glenoid cavity shape among the young adults studied. Differences may be observed in scapular length, breadth, and other selected measurements across the identified glenoid cavity morphological patterns. The findings are expected to indicate whether measurable associations exist between glenoid cavity shape and overall scapular dimensions and to provide additional information on individual variation in scapular morphology. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, radiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the shoulder region. Understanding the relationship between glenoid cavity shape and scapular dimensions may assist in interpreting anatomical and radiological findings and contribute to knowledge of glenohumeral joint morphology. The findings may also provide useful reference information for studies involving shoulder anatomy, osteology, implant design, and clinical assessment of the scapular region. The study will conclude by describing the morphological patterns of the glenoid cavity and their relationship with selected scapular dimensions among young adults. It is expected to establish the extent of association between glenoid cavity shape and the measured scapular characteristics within the study population. The study will recommend standardized morphometric procedures in future investigations and encourage further research involving larger and more diverse populations to improve understanding of variation in glenoid cavity and scapular morphology.
