Prevalence of Accessory Pulmonary Fissures Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the prevalence of accessory pulmonary fissures among young adults, with emphasis on the occurrence and distribution of additional fissures within the lungs. Pulmonary fissures are important anatomical structures that separate the lobes of the lungs and contribute to their morphological organization. Accessory fissures represent anatomical variations that may occur in addition to the normal major and minor fissures and are important in understanding variations in pulmonary anatomy, particularly during radiological assessment and thoracic surgical procedures. The study will determine the prevalence of accessory pulmonary fissures among young adults and document their distribution within the right and left lungs. The specific objectives will include identifying the presence of accessory pulmonary fissures, determining their frequency, documenting their anatomical location and pattern, and comparing their occurrence between the right and left lungs where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. The presence and characteristics of accessory pulmonary fissures will be assessed using an appropriate imaging-based procedure capable of demonstrating lung morphology and fissural patterns. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied where necessary to examine differences in fissural occurrence and distribution. The study is expected to reveal the occurrence of accessory pulmonary fissures among a proportion of the young adults studied. Variations may be observed in the frequency, location, and configuration of these fissures, with possible differences in their occurrence between the right and left lungs. The findings are expected to demonstrate that accessory pulmonary fissures constitute a recognizable anatomical variation that may differ among individuals. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, respiratory physicians, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of pulmonary conditions. The study may provide useful reference information for distinguishing accessory pulmonary fissures from abnormal linear opacities during radiological examinations. It may also support accurate anatomical interpretation and contribute to planning procedures involving the lobes and fissures of the lungs. The study will conclude by determining the prevalence and anatomical distribution of accessory pulmonary fissures among young adults. It is recommended that awareness of these anatomical variations should be incorporated into radiological interpretation and thoracic surgical assessment to reduce possible misinterpretation of normal pulmonary anatomy. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations are recommended to establish broader reference data on the prevalence and patterns of accessory pulmonary fissures.
