Morphological Variation of the Vastus Lateralis Muscle Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the vastus lateralis muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its anatomical configuration, dimensions, and structural characteristics. The vastus lateralis is the largest component of the quadriceps femoris muscle group and occupies the lateral aspect of the anterior thigh. It contributes significantly to knee extension and plays an important role in lower limb movement and functional stability. Understanding its morphological characteristics is important for documenting normal anatomical variation and providing useful information for clinical assessment of the thigh and knee region. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the vastus lateralis muscle using appropriate anatomical, imaging-based, or osteological assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the shape and configuration of the muscle, determining selected muscle dimensions, documenting differences in its anatomical arrangement, and identifying the occurrence of distinct morphological patterns among the study participants. Where applicable, the study will also assess differences between the right and left sides. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the vastus lateralis will be obtained using standardized anatomical or imaging procedures and appropriate measurement instruments. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to determine observed differences. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the vastus lateralis muscle among the participants, with variations potentially observed in its dimensions, shape, configuration, and anatomical relationships. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the morphology of the muscle, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data and improve understanding of variations in the vastus lateralis muscle.
