Morphological Variation of the Supraorbital Foramen Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the supraorbital foramen among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its presence, shape, size, and anatomical configuration. The supraorbital foramen is an important opening located along the superior margin of the orbit that transmits the supraorbital nerve and associated blood vessels. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics is important for understanding frontal bone anatomy and may support clinical procedures involving the forehead, orbit, and anterior cranial region. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the supraorbital foramen using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging-based or osteological assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the different morphological patterns of the supraorbital foramen, determining its measurable dimensions, documenting variations in its shape and configuration, and assessing right and left side differences where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable cranial imaging or osteological specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment procedure employed. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the supraorbital foramen will be obtained using standardized procedures and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Appropriate inferential statistical tests will also be applied where necessary to determine significant differences or side-related variation. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the supraorbital foramen, including variations in its shape, dimensions, and configuration. Differences between the right and left sides may also be observed, with some measurements potentially showing statistically significant side-related variation. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be maintained when evaluating the supraorbital region, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
