Morphological Variation of the Semimembranosus Muscle Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the semimembranosus muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its anatomical configuration, dimensions, and structural characteristics. The semimembranosus is one of the three hamstring muscles located in the posterior compartment of the thigh and occupies the medial aspect of the posterior thigh. It contributes to hip extension, knee flexion, and medial rotation of the leg and also plays a role in stabilizing the knee joint. Understanding its morphological characteristics is important for documenting normal anatomical variation and supporting clinical assessment of the posterior thigh and knee regions. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the semimembranosus muscle using appropriate anatomical or imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the shape and configuration of the muscle, determining selected muscle dimensions, documenting differences in its anatomical arrangement, and identifying distinct morphological patterns among the participants. Where applicable, the study will also assess differences between the right and left sides in the observed characteristics. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the semimembranosus will be obtained using standardized anatomical or imaging procedures and appropriate measurement instruments. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to determine observed differences. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the semimembranosus muscle among the participants, with variations potentially observed in its dimensions, shape, configuration, and anatomical characteristics. Differences between the right and left sides may also be identified, and some measurements may demonstrate statistically significant variation. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the morphology of the muscle, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data and improve understanding of variations in the semimembranosus muscle.
