Morphological Variation of the Palmaris Longus Muscle Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the palmaris longus muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on its presence, absence, and observable anatomical characteristics. The palmaris longus is a slender, superficial muscle of the anterior compartment of the forearm that contributes to tension of the palmar aponeurosis and flexion of the wrist. It is known for considerable anatomical variation, including unilateral or bilateral absence and differences in its muscular and tendinous configuration. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the palmaris longus muscle among undergraduate students and document the patterns of variation observed. The specific objectives will include determining the prevalence of the muscle, identifying unilateral and bilateral absence, assessing variations in its morphological appearance where observable, and comparing the observed patterns between the right and left upper limbs where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. The presence and morphological characteristics of the palmaris longus muscle will be assessed using standardized clinical anatomical examination procedures and appropriate imaging methods where necessary. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to determine relevant differences or associations. The study is expected to reveal variation in the presence and morphology of the palmaris longus muscle among the participants. Unilateral and bilateral absence may be observed, together with differences in selected morphological characteristics between individuals and between the right and left upper limbs. The findings are expected to demonstrate the variable nature of the palmaris longus and provide information on its anatomical patterns within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, orthopaedic surgeons, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, physiotherapists, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the upper limb. The palmaris longus tendon is also used as a donor structure in certain reconstructive procedures, making knowledge of its presence and anatomical variation relevant to clinical practice. The study may therefore provide useful reference information for anatomical examination and clinical planning involving the forearm and wrist. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological patterns and variations of the palmaris longus muscle among the study population. It is recommended that clinicians and anatomists consider possible anatomical variations when assessing the muscle, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on its prevalence and morphology.
