Morphological Variation of the Mental Foramen Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the mental foramen among undergraduate students, with emphasis on its anatomical characteristics, position, shape, and occurrence patterns. The mental foramen is an important anatomical opening located on the anterior aspect of the mandible and serves as the exit point for the mental nerve and associated vessels. Knowledge of its morphology is essential because variations in its anatomical features may have implications for dental procedures, local anaesthetic administration, mandibular surgery, and other clinical interventions involving the lower facial region. The study will aim to assess the morphological characteristics of the mental foramen among undergraduate students and determine the variation in its shape, position, and related anatomical features. It will also examine the frequency of different morphological patterns and document the occurrence of unilateral, bilateral, and other observable variations. The study will provide anatomical information that may contribute to a better understanding of individual differences in the structure of the mental foramen. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. The morphology and anatomical characteristics of the mental foramen will be assessed using suitable standardized anatomical landmarks and procedures, with appropriate imaging or anatomical assessment methods where required. Data obtained will be organized and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical methods will be applied where necessary to examine observed differences in morphological patterns. The study is expected to reveal variations in the morphology, shape, and position of the mental foramen among the participants. Differences in the frequency of the observed morphological patterns may also be identified, reflecting individual anatomical diversity. The findings are expected to provide useful information on the distribution of mental foramen characteristics within the study population and may contribute to the understanding of normal mandibular anatomical variation. The findings will be useful to anatomists, dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, radiologists, dental surgeons, and other healthcare professionals involved in procedures around the mandible. Knowledge of the morphological variation of the mental foramen may assist in improving anatomical localization, reducing the risk of injury to the mental neurovascular structures, and supporting safer clinical procedures. The study may also provide reference information for anatomical education and future anthropometric and osteological research. The study will conclude by providing information on the morphological diversity of the mental foramen among undergraduate students. It will recommend the consideration of individual anatomical variation during clinical and surgical procedures involving the mandibular region. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations and standardized imaging or osteological techniques will also be recommended to provide broader reference data on mental foramen morphology.
