Morphological Variation of the Lacrimal Sac Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the lacrimal sac among young adults, with emphasis on its shape, size, extent, orientation, and anatomical configuration. The lacrimal sac is a specialized component of the lacrimal drainage system that lies within the lacrimal fossa at the medial aspect of the orbit and receives tears from the canaliculi before continuing into the nasolacrimal duct. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics is important for understanding variations in the lacrimal drainage system and for supporting clinical and surgical procedures involving the orbital and nasolacrimal regions. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the lacrimal sac among young adults using relevant anatomical landmarks and standardized imaging-based or anatomical assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying different morphological patterns of the lacrimal sac, determining selected dimensions such as length, breadth, and extent where applicable, assessing variations in its shape and orientation, and documenting its anatomical relationships with adjacent orbital and nasolacrimal structures. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults or suitable anatomical or imaging specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the lacrimal sac will be obtained using standardized procedures and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate comparative and inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the lacrimal sac among the study population, including variations in its shape, dimensions, extent, and orientation. Differences between the right and left lacrimal sacs may also be observed in selected morphological characteristics and measurements. These findings are expected to demonstrate that the morphology of the lacrimal sac may vary among individuals and that such variations may be relevant to the anatomical assessment of the lacrimal drainage system. The findings will be useful to anatomists, ophthalmologists, otorhinolaryngologists, radiologists, and orbital and maxillofacial surgeons involved in the assessment and management of the lacrimal drainage system. It is recommended that individual and bilateral variations in lacrimal sac morphology be considered during anatomical, radiological, and surgical assessment of the lacrimal drainage system, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data.
