Morphological Variation of the Internal Oblique Muscle Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the internal oblique muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its anatomical configuration, dimensions, and structural characteristics. The internal oblique is a broad muscle of the anterolateral abdominal wall that contributes to trunk flexion, lateral flexion, rotation, and maintenance of abdominal wall stability. Its anatomical characteristics are important for understanding the structure and function of the abdominal wall and for appreciating individual variations that may be relevant in clinical and surgical procedures involving the abdomen. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the internal oblique muscle among undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the shape and configuration of the muscle, determining selected muscular dimensions, documenting differences in the arrangement and extent of its muscular and aponeurotic portions, and examining bilateral variations where applicable. The study will also assess selected anatomical relationships between the muscle and relevant landmarks of the abdominal wall. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the internal oblique muscle will be obtained using standardized anatomical assessment procedures, which may involve appropriate physical, imaging-based, or anatomical measurement techniques depending on the study setting. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests may be applied to determine significant differences or associations. The study is expected to reveal variations in the morphology and dimensions of the internal oblique muscle among the participants. Differences may be observed in muscle configuration, dimensions, muscular thickness, aponeurotic arrangement, and bilateral characteristics. Information on the morphological characteristics of the internal oblique muscle may support anatomical education, interpretation of imaging findings, surgical planning, rehabilitation assessment, and understanding of individual anatomical differences in the abdominal musculature. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the internal oblique muscle among the study population. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the internal oblique muscle and that further studies involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to establish broader reference data on its morphology, dimensions, and anatomical variability.
