Morphological Variation of the Hyoid Bone Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the hyoid bone among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its shape, dimensions, and structural characteristics. The hyoid bone is a distinctive U-shaped bone located in the anterior neck and is not directly articulated with other bones of the skeleton. It provides attachment for several muscles and ligaments involved in swallowing, speech, tongue movement, and stabilization of the upper airway. Understanding its morphological characteristics is important for appreciating normal anatomical variation and for supporting clinical, radiological, and forensic assessment of the neck region. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the hyoid bone among undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include identifying different morphological patterns of the hyoid bone, determining selected dimensions of its body and cornua, documenting variations in the shape and configuration of its major components, and examining bilateral differences in the greater and lesser cornua where applicable. The study will also assess selected anatomical relationships among the measurable components of the hyoid bone. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the hyoid bone will be obtained using standardized imaging-based or osteological assessment procedures, depending on the method available for the study. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests may be applied to determine significant differences or associations among selected morphological characteristics. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the hyoid bone among the participants. Variations may be observed in the shape and dimensions of the body, greater cornua, lesser cornua, and other structural components of the bone. Bilateral differences may also be observed in selected measurements, with some dimensions potentially demonstrating statistically significant side-related variation. The findings are expected to demonstrate that the hyoid bone exhibits measurable anatomical variability among undergraduate students. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, otolaryngologists, maxillofacial professionals, forensic anthropologists, forensic practitioners, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the neck and upper airway. Information on hyoid bone morphology may support anatomical education, interpretation of imaging findings, understanding of swallowing and speech-related structures, and forensic assessment where knowledge of hyoid morphology is relevant. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the hyoid bone among the study population. It is recommended that standardized imaging-based and osteological procedures be used when evaluating the hyoid bone and that further studies involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data on its morphology, dimensions, and structural variability.
