Morphological Variation of the Extensor Digitorum Muscle Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the extensor digitorum muscle among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in its anatomical configuration, muscle belly characteristics, tendon arrangement, and overall morphology. The extensor digitorum is an important superficial muscle of the posterior compartment of the forearm that contributes to extension of the fingers and hand. Variations in its muscular and tendinous arrangement may influence normal upper-limb function and may be relevant to anatomical interpretation and clinical procedures involving the forearm and hand. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the extensor digitorum muscle among undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the muscle's configuration, documenting differences in muscle belly and tendon arrangement, determining the occurrence of additional or variant muscular or tendinous patterns, and comparing observed characteristics between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable anatomical specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Morphological characteristics of the extensor digitorum will be assessed using standardized anatomical examination or appropriate imaging-based procedures. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal variations in the morphology and configuration of the extensor digitorum muscle among the participants. Differences may be observed in the arrangement of the muscle belly, number and distribution of tendon slips, and other anatomical features, with possible side-related variation between the right and left limbs. The findings are expected to demonstrate that the extensor digitorum may exhibit identifiable morphological differences among individuals. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, orthopaedic surgeons, radiologists, hand surgeons, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of upper-limb conditions. The study may provide useful anatomical reference information for understanding variations in the extensor digitorum and may support the interpretation of imaging findings, surgical planning, tendon-related procedures, and anatomical education. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and variations of the extensor digitorum muscle among the study population. It is recommended that awareness of possible anatomical variations be maintained during anatomical assessment and clinical procedures involving the posterior forearm and hand, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on extensor digitorum morphology.
