Morphological Variation of the Cuboid Sulcus Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines morphological variation of the cuboid sulcus among young adults, with emphasis on differences in its shape, depth, length, position, and overall anatomical configuration. The cuboid sulcus is an important groove on the plantar surface of the cuboid bone that accommodates the tendon of the fibularis longus muscle as it passes toward the medial aspect of the foot. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics is important for understanding the anatomy of the lateral and plantar aspects of the foot and may be relevant to clinical assessment, orthopedic procedures, radiological interpretation, and anatomical studies of the foot. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of the cuboid sulcus among young adults and document the patterns of variation observed within the study population. The specific objectives will include identifying the different shapes and configurations of the cuboid sulcus, determining its length, breadth, and depth, documenting its position and surface characteristics, and comparing the observed features between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of cuboid bones or suitable osteological specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the cuboid sulcus will be obtained through direct osteological examination using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate measuring instruments. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied where necessary to determine significant differences or associations among the observed morphological characteristics. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of the cuboid sulcus among the specimens studied. Variations may be observed in the shape, depth, length, breadth, curvature, and overall configuration of the sulcus. Bilateral differences may also be identified in selected dimensions or morphological features, while some characteristics may demonstrate considerable similarity between the right and left sides. The findings will be useful to anatomists, orthopedic surgeons, podiatrists, radiologists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the foot. The study may provide useful reference information for understanding normal variation in the cuboid sulcus and its relationship with structures passing along the plantar aspect of the foot. The findings may also contribute to the interpretation of imaging studies and procedures involving the lateral foot and fibularis longus tendon. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and patterns of variation of the cuboid sulcus among young adults. It is recommended that standardized osteological and imaging-based procedures be used when evaluating the cuboid sulcus and that further studies involving larger and more diverse skeletal samples be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data on its morphology and dimensions.
