Morphological Variation of the Bipartite Patella Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the morphological variation of the bipartite patella among young adults, with emphasis on the occurrence, classification, and anatomical characteristics of patellar bipartition. The patella is the largest sesamoid bone in the human body and plays an important role in the extensor mechanism of the knee joint. Bipartite patella is a developmental anatomical variation resulting from failure of complete fusion of secondary ossification centres, and its morphology may vary in location, shape, size, and extent of separation. The study will assess the morphological characteristics of bipartite patella among young adults and document the different patterns observed. The specific objectives will include identifying the occurrence of bipartite patella, classifying the observed morphological patterns according to the location of the accessory fragment, determining selected dimensions of the patella and accessory fragment where applicable, and documenting variations in the shape and configuration of the bipartite patella. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults or suitable radiological or osteological specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. The morphology of the patella will be assessed using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging or osteological procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to assess relevant morphological differences. The study is expected to reveal different morphological patterns of bipartite patella among the study population, including variation in the size, shape, location, and configuration of the accessory fragment.
