Correlation Between Nasal Base Breadth and Mouth Width Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines the correlation between nasal base breadth and mouth width among undergraduate students, focusing on the association between these two facial anthropometric dimensions. Nasal base breadth and mouth width are important components of external facial morphology and contribute to the overall proportions of the middle and lower regions of the face. Understanding the relationship between these measurements may provide useful information on normal facial variation and contribute to anatomical and anthropometric research. The study will determine the nasal base breadth and mouth width of undergraduate students using standardized anatomical landmarks and direct anthropometric measurement procedures. Nasal base breadth will be measured across the widest portion of the nasal base, while mouth width will be measured as the horizontal distance between the right and left corners of the mouth. The study will describe the distribution of both measurements and determine the degree of association between nasal base breadth and mouth width among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the established eligibility criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through direct observation and standardized anthropometric measurements using suitable measuring instruments, with consistent participant positioning and anatomical landmarks maintained throughout the assessment. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while Pearson correlation analysis will be used to determine the relationship between nasal base breadth and mouth width. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in nasal base breadth and mouth width among the undergraduate students. The correlation analysis is expected to indicate the direction and strength of the association between the two facial measurements. The findings may demonstrate whether individuals with greater nasal base breadth tend to exhibit corresponding differences in mouth width within the study population. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, forensic practitioners, clinicians, and researchers involved in facial anthropometry and human identification. The information may provide reference data for comparative studies of facial proportions and contribute to a better understanding of relationships among facial dimensions. It may also be relevant to clinical assessment, reconstructive procedures, and facial morphological studies involving the nose and mouth. The study will conclude by establishing the nature and strength of the correlation between nasal base breadth and mouth width among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures be maintained when assessing facial dimensions to improve measurement reliability and comparability. Further research involving larger and more diverse populations is recommended to provide broader reference information on the relationship between nasal and oral facial dimensions.
