Correlation Between Intermolar Width and Maxillary Breadth Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study will examine the correlation between intermolar width and maxillary breadth among undergraduate students. Intermolar width represents the transverse distance between corresponding molar landmarks within the dental arch, while maxillary breadth reflects the transverse dimension of the upper jaw. The relationship between these dimensions is relevant to understanding craniofacial morphology, dental arch development, and the proportional characteristics of the maxillofacial region. The study will determine the intermolar width of the participants using standardized dental anthropometric landmarks and appropriate intraoral measurement procedures. Maxillary breadth will also be assessed using suitable anatomical landmarks and standardized measurement techniques. The study will further examine the degree of variation in both dimensions among the participants and determine whether differences in maxillary breadth are associated with corresponding differences in intermolar width. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the established inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected through direct anthropometric and dental measurements using calibrated instruments and standardized procedures to improve measurement accuracy and consistency. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while correlation analysis will be used to determine the relationship between intermolar width and maxillary breadth. The study is expected to reveal variations in intermolar width and maxillary breadth among the undergraduate students. A measurable relationship may be observed between the two dimensions, indicating the extent to which transverse maxillary dimensions correspond with dental arch width. The findings are expected to provide quantitative information on the relationship between dental and skeletal dimensions without implying a causal relationship between the variables. The findings will be useful to anatomists, dental practitioners, orthodontists, and other professionals involved in craniofacial assessment and dental treatment planning. The study may provide useful anthropometric information for understanding transverse maxillary morphology and dental arch characteristics among young adults. It may also serve as a reference for future studies involving dental arch dimensions, maxillary morphology, orthodontic assessment, and craniofacial anthropometry. The study will conclude by establishing the observed relationship between intermolar width and maxillary breadth among the selected undergraduate students. It will recommend the use of standardized measurement landmarks and procedures in dental and craniofacial anthropometric studies to ensure reliable results. Further research involving larger and more diverse populations will also be recommended to provide broader comparative data on the relationship between dental arch and maxillary dimensions.
