Bilateral Variation in Wormian Bone Occurrence Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines bilateral variation in Wormian bone occurrence among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in the presence, number, location, and morphological characteristics of these accessory bones between the right and left sides of the skull. Wormian bones are small additional ossicles that occur within the cranial sutures and fontanelle regions as anatomical variations in skull development. Their occurrence and distribution are of interest in anatomical, anthropological, radiological, and forensic studies because their patterns may vary considerably among individuals. The study will assess the occurrence and morphological characteristics of Wormian bones and determine the extent of bilateral variation between corresponding cranial regions. The specific objectives will include determining the frequency of Wormian bone occurrence, identifying their common anatomical locations, documenting their number, shape, and dimensions where applicable, and comparing their occurrence and morphological characteristics between the right and left sides of the skull. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, with cranial imaging or appropriate osteological specimens used for assessment depending on the study method employed. The presence, location, number, and morphology of Wormian bones will be documented using standardized anatomical and imaging procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate paired or inferential statistical tests will be applied to assess relevant bilateral differences. The study is expected to reveal variations in the occurrence and distribution of Wormian bones among the participants. Differences may be observed in their presence, number, location, shape, and dimensions between the right and left sides of the skull. Some cranial regions may demonstrate greater occurrence on one side than the other, while certain individuals may exhibit similar patterns bilaterally. The findings are expected to demonstrate that Wormian bone occurrence may show considerable individual and bilateral variation. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, radiologists, neurosurgeons, craniofacial surgeons, forensic anthropologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of cranial anatomy. The study may provide useful reference information for recognizing normal cranial anatomical variants, interpreting radiological images, differentiating accessory bones from cranial fractures or other abnormalities, and supporting anthropological and forensic assessments of skeletal remains. The study will conclude by documenting the pattern and extent of bilateral variation in Wormian bone occurrence among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when identifying and evaluating Wormian bones, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on their occurrence, distribution, and morphological characteristics.
