Bilateral Variation in Palatal Rugae Arrangement Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines bilateral variation in palatal rugae arrangement among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in the number, pattern, shape, direction, and distribution of palatal rugae between the right and left sides of the hard palate. Palatal rugae are irregular ridges of mucosa located on the anterior part of the hard palate and exhibit distinctive anatomical patterns among individuals. Their relatively stable characteristics make them relevant to oral anatomy, forensic identification, and clinical dental assessment, while knowledge of bilateral variation contributes to a better understanding of normal palatal morphology. The study will assess the arrangement of palatal rugae among undergraduate students and compare selected characteristics between the right and left sides of the palate. The specific objectives will include determining the number of palatal rugae on each side, identifying their different shapes and patterns, assessing their directional arrangement and distribution, and determining the extent of bilateral variation in the observed palatal rugae characteristics. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data on the arrangement and morphology of palatal rugae will be obtained through standardized oral examination, palatal impressions, photographs, dental casts, or suitable imaging procedures, depending on the assessment method employed. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate paired comparative tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal variations in the number, shape, direction, and distribution of palatal rugae between the right and left sides of the hard palate. Some rugae characteristics may demonstrate relatively similar patterns bilaterally, while other features may show measurable side-related differences. These findings are expected to demonstrate that palatal rugae arrangement may exhibit individual and bilateral anatomical variation among undergraduate students. The findings will be useful to anatomists, dentists, orthodontists, oral and maxillofacial specialists, and forensic practitioners involved in oral and craniofacial assessment. The study may provide useful anatomical reference information for understanding bilateral palatal variation and may contribute to the use of palatal rugae characteristics in forensic identification and dental assessment where appropriate. The study will conclude by documenting the arrangement and bilateral variations of palatal rugae among the study population. It is recommended that both sides of the palate be assessed when documenting palatal rugae patterns, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on palatal rugae morphology and bilateral variation.
