Bilateral Variation in Mandibular Condyle Morphology Among Young Adults
Abstract
The study examines bilateral variation in mandibular condyle morphology among young adults, with emphasis on differences between the right and left condyles. The mandibular condyle is an important component of the temporomandibular joint and contributes to mandibular movement and articulation with the temporal bone. Understanding variations in condylar morphology is relevant to craniofacial anatomy, dental practice, orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, radiology, and the assessment of temporomandibular joint structures. The study aims to determine the morphological characteristics of the right and left mandibular condyles among young adults and assess bilateral differences in selected condylar dimensions and shape characteristics. It will also determine the frequency of observed morphological patterns and establish whether measurable differences exist between the two sides. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Young adults will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, while standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures will be used to assess the mandibular condyles. Relevant condylar dimensions and morphological features will be evaluated through suitable radiological or anatomical assessment procedures. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate paired statistical tests will be applied to determine significant bilateral differences. The study is expected to reveal measurable morphological variation between the right and left mandibular condyles among the participants. Differences may be observed in selected condylar dimensions, shape, orientation, or overall configuration, although the degree of bilateral variation is expected to differ among individuals. The findings are expected to provide useful information on the normal range of condylar morphology and the occurrence of anatomical asymmetry. The findings will be useful to anatomists, dentists, orthodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, radiologists, and other professionals involved in the assessment of the temporomandibular region. The study may provide reference information for interpreting condylar morphology during radiological examination, treatment planning, surgical procedures, and evaluation of anatomical asymmetry. The study concludes that documenting bilateral variation in mandibular condyle morphology can contribute to a better understanding of normal anatomical differences within the temporomandibular region. It is recommended that standardized assessment procedures be used in future investigations and that studies involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to establish broader reference data on mandibular condylar morphology.
