Bilateral Variation in Major Salivary Gland Dimensions Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines bilateral variation in major salivary gland dimensions among young adults, with emphasis on differences in the size and selected morphometric characteristics of the right and left parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. The major salivary glands are important exocrine structures that produce and contribute to the secretion of saliva, which supports lubrication, digestion, oral protection, and maintenance of the oral environment. Knowledge of their dimensions and bilateral variations is important for understanding normal salivary gland anatomy and for supporting clinical and radiological assessment of the head and neck region. The study will determine and compare selected dimensions of the major salivary glands among young adults, with particular attention to right-left differences. The specific objectives will include measuring the length, breadth, thickness, and other applicable dimensions of the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands, determining the mean measurements on each side, identifying the extent of bilateral variation, and assessing whether significant differences exist between corresponding right and left gland measurements. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults or suitable anatomical or imaging specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Data on the dimensions of the major salivary glands will be obtained using standardized imaging-based or anatomical measurement procedures and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate paired comparative tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal variations in the dimensions of the major salivary glands among the study population. Some measurements may demonstrate measurable differences between the right and left sides, while other dimensions may show relatively similar bilateral patterns. Differences may also vary among the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. These findings are expected to demonstrate that bilateral symmetry in major salivary gland dimensions may not always be exact and that side-related anatomical variation may occur among young adults. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, otorhinolaryngologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the salivary glands and surrounding head and neck structures. The study may provide useful anatomical reference information for interpreting salivary gland imaging, distinguishing normal bilateral variation from unusual findings, and supporting diagnostic and surgical procedures involving the major salivary glands. The study will conclude by documenting the dimensions and bilateral variations of the major salivary glands among the study population. It is recommended that possible right-left differences in salivary gland dimensions be considered during anatomical and radiological assessments, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference values for major salivary gland morphology.
