Bilateral Variation in Hyoid Bone Morphology Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines bilateral variation in hyoid bone morphology among young adults, with emphasis on differences between the right and left sides of the greater and lesser cornua and other measurable anatomical features of the bone. The hyoid bone is a unique U-shaped bone located in the anterior neck and is suspended by muscles and ligaments without direct articulation with other bones. It provides attachment for muscles involved in swallowing, speech, tongue movement, and stabilization of the upper airway. Understanding its morphological variation is important in anatomical, radiological, forensic, and clinical assessments of the neck region. The study will assess the morphological characteristics and dimensions of the hyoid bone and determine the extent of bilateral variation between the right and left sides. The specific objectives will include identifying variations in the shape and configuration of the hyoid bone, measuring selected dimensions of the body and cornua, comparing corresponding right and left measurements, and documenting the occurrence of asymmetrical morphological features among the study population. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults or suitable osteological or imaging specimens will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. Data on hyoid bone morphology and dimensions will be obtained using standardized osteological or imaging-based procedures and appropriate anatomical landmarks. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate paired statistical tests will be applied to determine significant differences between corresponding right and left measurements. The study is expected to reveal variations in the morphology and dimensions of the hyoid bone among the young adults studied. Differences may be observed between the right and left greater and lesser cornua, including variation in length, breadth, thickness, orientation, and overall configuration. Some corresponding measurements may demonstrate statistically significant bilateral differences, while others may show relatively similar dimensions between the two sides. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, forensic anthropologists, otolaryngologists, maxillofacial surgeons, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the neck and upper airway. The study may provide useful reference information on normal bilateral variation of the hyoid bone and support the interpretation of radiological and osteological findings. The findings may also contribute to anatomical knowledge relevant to forensic identification and the assessment of skeletal variation. The study will conclude by documenting the pattern and extent of bilateral morphological variation in the hyoid bone among young adults. It is recommended that both sides of the hyoid bone be considered during anatomical and radiological assessment rather than assuming complete bilateral symmetry. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations are recommended to provide broader reference data on hyoid bone morphology and bilateral variation.
