Bilateral Variation in External Auditory Canal Morphology Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study examines bilateral variation in external auditory canal morphology among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in the anatomical characteristics of the right and left external auditory canals. The external auditory canal is a specialized passage extending from the auricle to the tympanic membrane and plays an important role in conducting sound toward the middle ear while also contributing to the protection of deeper auditory structures. Knowledge of its morphological characteristics is important for understanding normal anatomical variation and may be relevant to otological assessment, audiological procedures, forensic identification, and clinical examination. The study will assess the morphological characteristics and selected dimensions of the external auditory canal and determine the extent of variation between the right and left sides among the study participants. The specific objectives will include determining the shape and configuration of the external auditory canal, measuring selected canal dimensions, documenting side-related differences, and comparing the observed characteristics between the right and left ears of the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data on the morphology and dimensions of the external auditory canal will be obtained through appropriate clinical, imaging-based, or anatomical assessment procedures using standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement techniques. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate paired inferential tests will be applied to determine significant differences between the right and left sides. The study is expected to reveal variations in the morphology and dimensions of the external auditory canal among the undergraduate students studied. Differences between the right and left ears may be observed in selected measurements or morphological characteristics, while some parameters may show considerable bilateral similarity. The findings are expected to demonstrate that the external auditory canal may exhibit measurable side-related anatomical variation within individuals. The findings will be useful to anatomists, otologists, audiologists, radiologists, forensic practitioners, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment of the external ear and auditory canal. The study may provide useful reference information for understanding bilateral anatomical variation and may support the interpretation of clinical and imaging findings involving the external auditory canal. The study will conclude by documenting the morphological characteristics and bilateral variation of the external auditory canal among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized anatomical and imaging-based procedures be used when assessing the external auditory canal and that further studies involving larger and more diverse populations be conducted to establish broader reference data on its morphological characteristics and side-related variation.
