Bilateral Variation in Ethmoidal Foramen Location Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines bilateral variation in ethmoidal foramen location among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences between the right and left sides of the anterior cranial region. The ethmoidal foramina are important anatomical openings located along the medial orbital wall and provide passage for the anterior and posterior ethmoidal nerves and vessels. Understanding variations in their location is relevant to craniofacial anatomy, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, radiology, neurosurgery, and surgical procedures involving the orbit and anterior cranial fossa. The study aims to determine the locations of the anterior and posterior ethmoidal foramina on the right and left sides among undergraduate students and assess bilateral differences in their positions relative to selected anatomical landmarks. It will also document the range of observed measurements and determine the frequency of different positional patterns. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique, while standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures will be used to assess the locations of the ethmoidal foramina. Their positions will be evaluated through suitable radiological imaging or osteological assessment procedures, depending on the available study materials. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate paired statistical tests will be applied to determine significant differences between the right and left sides. The study is expected to reveal measurable bilateral variation in the locations of the ethmoidal foramina among the participants. Differences may be observed in their distances from selected orbital and cranial landmarks, as well as in the relative positions of the anterior and posterior ethmoidal foramina. The degree of bilateral variation is expected to differ among individuals, providing useful information on the anatomical diversity of the ethmoidal region. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, ophthalmologists, otolaryngologists, neurosurgeons, and other healthcare professionals involved in the evaluation and management of orbital and anterior cranial structures. The study may provide reference information that can support radiological interpretation and improve anatomical orientation during surgical procedures involving the medial orbital wall, paranasal sinuses, and anterior cranial fossa. The study concludes that documenting bilateral variation in ethmoidal foramen location can contribute to a better understanding of anatomical asymmetry within the anterior cranial region. It is recommended that standardized imaging and measurement procedures be used in future investigations and that larger and more diverse populations be studied to establish broader reference data on ethmoidal foramen location and variation.
