Bilateral Variation in Cervical Vertebral Articular Facets Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study examines bilateral variation in cervical vertebral articular facets among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in the morphology and dimensions of corresponding articular facets between the right and left sides of the cervical vertebrae. The cervical vertebrae form the upper portion of the vertebral column and play important roles in supporting the head, facilitating neck movement, and protecting the cervical spinal cord. The articular facets contribute to the stability and mobility of the cervical spine, making their anatomical variation relevant to clinical and anatomical assessment. The study will assess the morphological characteristics and dimensions of the articular facets of selected cervical vertebrae and determine the extent of bilateral variation. The specific objectives will include identifying the different shapes and configurations of the articular facets, determining their measurable dimensions, assessing their orientation and surface characteristics, and comparing corresponding right and left facets to identify patterns of bilateral similarity or variation. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students or suitable cervical vertebral osteological specimens will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, depending on the assessment method employed. The morphology and dimensions of the articular facets will be assessed using standardized osteological or imaging-based procedures and appropriate measuring instruments. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate paired inferential statistical tests will be applied to determine whether significant differences exist between corresponding right and left articular facets. The study is expected to reveal variations in the morphology and dimensions of the cervical vertebral articular facets among the participants. Differences may be observed in facet length, breadth, orientation, shape, and surface configuration between the right and left sides. Some corresponding facets may demonstrate statistically significant bilateral differences, while others may show relatively similar anatomical patterns. The findings are expected to demonstrate that cervical articular facet morphology may exhibit individual and bilateral variation. The findings will be useful to anatomists, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, radiologists, physiotherapists, chiropractors, and forensic anthropologists. The study may provide useful reference information for understanding bilateral anatomical variation in the cervical spine, interpreting radiological and anatomical findings, supporting selected clinical and surgical procedures involving the cervical vertebrae, and contributing to forensic and anthropological assessment of skeletal remains. The study will conclude by documenting the pattern and extent of bilateral variation in cervical vertebral articular facets among undergraduate students. It is recommended that standardized osteological and imaging-based procedures be used when assessing cervical articular facets, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader anatomical reference data and improve understanding of bilateral variation in the cervical spine.
