Bilateral Differences in Femoral Length Among Undergraduate Students
Abstract
The study examines bilateral differences in femoral length among undergraduate students. The femur is the longest bone in the human body and contributes significantly to lower limb structure, body proportions, posture, and locomotion. Differences between the right and left femora may occur as part of normal anatomical variation and may provide useful information for understanding lower limb symmetry. The study will determine and compare the femoral lengths of the right and left sides among undergraduate students. It will assess the magnitude and distribution of bilateral differences and determine whether the observed differences are statistically significant. Standardized anatomical landmarks and measurement procedures will be applied to improve the accuracy and consistency of the measurements. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who meet the established eligibility criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Femoral length on both sides will be measured using a suitable anthropometric instrument and standardized procedures. The collected data will be analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while an appropriate paired statistical technique will be used to compare right and left femoral lengths. The study is expected to reveal the extent of bilateral variation in femoral length among the participants. It is also expected to establish whether meaningful differences exist between the right and left sides and to describe the general pattern of femoral length within the study population. The findings will provide prospective anthropometric information on lower limb symmetry among undergraduate students. The findings are expected to be useful to anatomists, anthropologists, physiotherapists, orthopaedic practitioners, forensic practitioners, and other health-related researchers. Information on bilateral femoral dimensions may provide useful reference data for anatomical studies, clinical assessment, forensic identification, rehabilitation planning, and research involving lower limb asymmetry. The study will conclude by describing the pattern of bilateral differences in femoral length among undergraduate students. It is recommended that similar studies be conducted using larger and more diverse populations to establish broader reference values and improve understanding of normal bilateral variation in femoral dimensions.
