Assessment of the Adequacy of Anatomy Laboratory Resources for Practical Teaching

Abstract

The study examines the adequacy of anatomy laboratory resources for practical teaching, with emphasis on the availability, accessibility, quantity, condition, and suitability of resources required for effective practical anatomy education. Anatomy laboratory resources provide students with opportunities to observe, handle, identify, and interpret anatomical structures through direct and visual learning experiences. Adequate provision of these resources is therefore important for supporting practical instruction and facilitating students’ understanding of three-dimensional anatomical relationships. The study will assess the adequacy of resources available for practical anatomy teaching and determine whether the existing resources are sufficient for the needs of undergraduate students. The specific objectives will include assessing the availability of anatomical specimens, bones, prosections, models, charts, dissection equipment, imaging resources, and other relevant laboratory materials, examining their condition and accessibility, and identifying major gaps or limitations affecting practical anatomy teaching. A descriptive cross-sectional research design will be adopted for the study. Selected anatomy teaching laboratories in relevant higher institutions will be assessed using an appropriate sampling approach. Data will be collected through a structured laboratory observation checklist, relevant laboratory records, and questionnaires administered to anatomy students and, where appropriate, laboratory personnel. Information on the quantity, condition, accessibility, maintenance, and suitability of available resources will be recorded and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of adequacy among the anatomy laboratory resources assessed. Some commonly used resources may be sufficiently available and accessible, while certain anatomical specimens, specialized equipment, imaging resources, or instructional materials may be limited. Differences may also be observed in the condition and maintenance of resources, particularly where resources are frequently used by large numbers of students or require specialized preservation and management. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, laboratory managers, curriculum developers, institutional administrators, and other stakeholders involved in practical anatomy education. The study may provide useful information for identifying resource deficiencies and improving laboratory planning, procurement, maintenance, and utilization. Adequate practical resources may provide students with more opportunities for direct observation, structural identification, dissection-related activities, and understanding of anatomical relationships. The study will conclude by documenting the adequacy of anatomy laboratory resources for practical teaching and identifying major areas requiring improvement. It is recommended that institutions should regularly evaluate their anatomy laboratories and provide sufficient, well-maintained, accessible, and appropriate resources to support practical teaching. Further studies involving multiple institutions and different educational settings should also be conducted to provide broader information on the adequacy of anatomy laboratory resources and practical anatomy education.
