Assessment of Students’ Knowledge of Surface Anatomy Relevant to Physical Examination
Abstract
The study assesses students’ knowledge of surface anatomy relevant to physical examination. Surface anatomy provides an important foundation for understanding the relationship between external body landmarks and underlying anatomical structures. Adequate knowledge of surface markings, palpable structures, anatomical regions, and the positions of underlying organs, muscles, vessels, and other structures is essential for accurate physical examination and the effective application of anatomical knowledge in clinical settings. The study will assess the level of students’ knowledge of surface anatomy and its relevance to physical examination. The specific objectives will include determining students’ knowledge of important surface anatomical landmarks, assessing their ability to relate external landmarks to underlying structures, identifying areas of surface anatomy that students find difficult to recognize or locate, and evaluating students’ understanding of the clinical relevance of surface anatomical knowledge during physical examination. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Undergraduate students who have received relevant anatomy instruction will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured and appropriately validated questionnaire and, where applicable, practical identification tasks involving surface anatomical landmarks and body regions. The data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of knowledge of surface anatomy among the students. Students may demonstrate better knowledge of commonly taught and easily identifiable landmarks, while greater difficulties may be observed in locating deeper structures, distinguishing closely related anatomical landmarks, or relating surface features to underlying structures. Differences may also be observed across different anatomical regions and areas requiring practical palpation or spatial interpretation. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anatomy educators, medical educators, and clinical instructors by providing information on students’ understanding of surface anatomy and its application to physical examination. The study may help identify areas requiring additional practical demonstrations, landmark identification exercises, palpation activities, anatomical models, and clinically oriented learning resources. It may also support the development of teaching and assessment approaches that strengthen the connection between basic anatomy and physical examination. The study will conclude by assessing students’ knowledge of surface anatomy relevant to physical examination and identifying areas where further learning support may be required. It is recommended that surface anatomy should be integrated with practical and clinically oriented anatomy teaching through repeated landmark identification, demonstration, palpation, and application-based activities. Further studies involving larger and more diverse groups of students are also recommended.
