Assessment of Knowledge of Human Musculoskeletal Anatomy Among Physiotherapy Students
Abstract
The study examines the knowledge of human musculoskeletal anatomy among physiotherapy students, with emphasis on their understanding of the bones, joints, muscles, connective tissues, and anatomical relationships that contribute to human movement and physical function. Musculoskeletal anatomy provides an important foundation for physiotherapy education because accurate knowledge of body structures is required for understanding movement, posture, injury, and rehabilitation. Adequate anatomical knowledge may therefore support the development of appropriate clinical reasoning and practical skills among physiotherapy students. The study will assess the level of musculoskeletal anatomy knowledge among physiotherapy students and identify areas of strength and weakness in their understanding. The specific objectives will include assessing students’ knowledge of major bones and joints, evaluating their understanding of muscle attachments and actions, examining knowledge of anatomical relationships relevant to movement and function, and identifying areas of musculoskeletal anatomy that may require further academic attention. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of physiotherapy students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured and validated anatomy knowledge assessment covering selected aspects of musculoskeletal anatomy. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential tests will be applied where necessary to examine relevant associations between selected academic characteristics and anatomy knowledge. The study is expected to reveal varying levels of musculoskeletal anatomy knowledge among the participating physiotherapy students. Differences may be observed in students’ understanding of skeletal structures, joint anatomy, muscle attachments, muscle actions, and the anatomical relationships underlying human movement. The findings may also identify specific musculoskeletal concepts that present learning difficulties and areas in which students demonstrate relatively stronger knowledge. The findings will be useful to anatomists, physiotherapy educators, physiotherapists, medical educators, and other health professionals involved in physiotherapy training. The findings may provide useful information for identifying knowledge gaps and improving the teaching and assessment of musculoskeletal anatomy within physiotherapy education. The results may also support the use of practical demonstrations, anatomical models, movement-based learning activities, and clinically oriented teaching approaches to strengthen students’ understanding of musculoskeletal structures. The study will conclude by assessing the level of human musculoskeletal anatomy knowledge among physiotherapy students and identifying areas requiring further educational attention. It is recommended that musculoskeletal anatomy education should integrate structural knowledge with movement and functional applications, while regular practical assessments and reinforcement activities should be encouraged to improve students’ anatomical understanding and its application to physiotherapy practice.
