Anatomical Variation in the Number of Pulmonary Fissures Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines anatomical variation in the number of pulmonary fissures among young adults, with emphasis on variations in the fissures that separate the lobes of the lungs. Pulmonary fissures are important anatomical landmarks that facilitate the division of the lungs into distinct lobes and contribute to the organization of the bronchopulmonary segments. Knowledge of variations in the number and configuration of pulmonary fissures is important for understanding normal pulmonary anatomy and for supporting accurate interpretation of radiological findings and surgical procedures involving the lungs. The study will determine the number of pulmonary fissures present among young adults and document variations in their occurrence and distribution. The specific objectives will include identifying the number of fissures present in the right and left lungs, determining the frequency of different fissural patterns, documenting the presence or absence of additional or incomplete fissures, and comparing the observed patterns between the two lungs where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. The pulmonary fissures will be assessed using an appropriate imaging-based procedure capable of demonstrating lung anatomy and fissural configuration. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate inferential statistical tests will be applied where necessary to examine differences in fissural patterns. The study is expected to reveal variations in the number and configuration of pulmonary fissures among the young adults studied. The typical fissural arrangement may be observed in most participants, while some individuals may demonstrate additional, incomplete, or absent fissures. Differences may also be observed between the right and left lungs, reflecting normal anatomical variation in pulmonary morphology. The findings will be useful to anatomists, radiologists, pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, respiratory physicians, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of pulmonary conditions. The study may provide useful reference information for distinguishing normal fissural variations from pathological changes during radiological examination. It may also contribute to surgical planning and improve understanding of individual variations in lung anatomy. The study will conclude by documenting the number and patterns of pulmonary fissures observed among young adults. It is recommended that variations in pulmonary fissural anatomy should be considered during radiological interpretation and thoracic procedures to reduce the possibility of misinterpretation. Further studies involving larger and more diverse populations are recommended to establish broader anatomical reference data on pulmonary fissural variations.
