Anatomical Variation in the Distribution of the Supraclavicular Nerves Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines anatomical variation in the distribution of the supraclavicular nerves among young adults, with emphasis on differences in their branching patterns, distribution, and relationships with surrounding anatomical structures. The supraclavicular nerves are cutaneous branches of the cervical plexus that emerge from the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and provide sensory innervation to the skin over the clavicular and upper thoracic regions. Knowledge of their anatomical distribution is important because variations in their course and branching may influence clinical examination, regional anaesthesia, surgical procedures, and the management of sensory disturbances involving the neck and shoulder regions. The study will assess the distribution and anatomical patterns of the supraclavicular nerves among young adults. The specific objectives will include identifying the number and branching patterns of the supraclavicular nerves, determining their distribution over the clavicular and upper thoracic regions, assessing variations in their course and relationships with identifiable anatomical landmarks, and documenting differences between the right and left sides where applicable. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of young adults will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, depending on the anatomical assessment method employed. Data on the course, branching pattern, and distribution of the supraclavicular nerves will be obtained using standardized anatomical examination, imaging-based assessment, or appropriate dissection procedures where applicable. The collected data will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to assess side-related or pattern-related differences. The study is expected to reveal variations in the number, branching pattern, course, and distribution of the supraclavicular nerves among the young adults studied. Differences may be observed in the extent of cutaneous distribution and in the relationship of the nerve branches to anatomical landmarks, while right and left sides may demonstrate similar or differing patterns. The findings are expected to demonstrate that the distribution of the supraclavicular nerves may vary among individuals and that such variation should be considered during anatomical and clinical assessment. The findings will be useful to anatomists, anaesthetists, surgeons, radiologists, neurologists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in procedures affecting the neck, clavicular, and shoulder regions. The study may provide useful anatomical reference information for regional nerve blocks, surgical approaches, clinical examination, management of postoperative sensory changes, and the interpretation of anatomical or imaging findings involving the supraclavicular region. The study will conclude by documenting the anatomical patterns and variations in the distribution of the supraclavicular nerves among young adults. It is recommended that standardized anatomical landmarks and careful identification of nerve branches be used during clinical and surgical procedures involving the supraclavicular region, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on supraclavicular nerve distribution.
